System Engineer – Electro-Optics
Job Description
Be part of a global leader in advanced defense and technology solutions, driving innovation across aerospace, cyber defense, autonomous systems, and precision-guided munitions. Our organization supports national security and global stability through cutting-edge research, engineering excellence, and a commitment to mission success
A System Engineer – Electro-Optics will lead the design, development, integration, and testing of electro-optical (EO) systems for defense applications. The ideal candidate will be responsible for system-level engineering, including requirements definition, system architecture, performance analysis, and technical oversight throughout the product lifecycle. This role requires expertise in electro-optical technologies, sensor integration, and system modeling to support defense and military-grade optical systems.
Responsibilities:
• Define system architecture, technical specifications, and performance requirements for EO systems, including infrared (IR), visible, laser, and multi-spectral/hyperspectral imaging systems.
• Manage and lead the integration of optical, mechanical, electronic, and software components to ensure seamless system functionality.
• Conduct trade-off studies to evaluate design options based on performance, cost, and manufacturability.
• Gather and analyze customer and mission requirements to define system capabilities and constraints.
• Develop and manage system requirements using tools such as DOORS, Cameo, or similar.
• Ensure compliance with military and industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, STANAG).
• Lead hardware and software integration of EO systems in laboratory and field environments.
• Plan and execute system verification & validation (V&V) activities, including electro-optical performance testing and environmental qualification tests.
• Support troubleshooting and debugging efforts during integration and testing phases.
• Perform electro-optical system modeling and simulation using tools like MATLAB, Zemax, or Code V.
• Conduct radiometric, optical, and signal processing analyses to optimize system performance.
• Develop and validate image processing and tracking algorithms for EO applications.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications, system design documents, and test plans.
• Support safety, reliability, and risk assessment activities in compliance with defense industry standards.
• Manage and lead coordination with optical engineers, mechanical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing teams to optimize system performance.
• Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
• An understanding of defense Electro-Optics product development and production.
Experience & Education Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent Major
• Msc or Phd in relevant engineering major
• Certifications in INCOSE, Six Sigma, or Systems Engineering methodologies.
• Minimum: years of experience in defence electro-Optics system engineering
• Strong knowledge of EO/IR sensor technology, imaging systems, laser systems, and optical design principles.
