Overview of the position:
-Linux position: Sr. Sys Admin (Linux expert)
-here in Sunnyvale: autonomous driving. Collab with Germany with auto driving, 1 big project (with Porsche)
Want to transform the org towards DevOps. Looking to build new teams that are integrated/embedded into the business units, need to integrate auto driving and digital vehicle and power train testing and design, HR shared services etc, financial depts. To focus on autonomous driving
Different levels of expertise, up to hadoop data expert to support business unit complete into one team. Team is embedded in the location within the team, lots of access thru short channels and increase efficiency/speed
Each business unit requires different skills; some depts use Mac some use Windows
AUTO DRIVING IS FOCUSED ON LINUX operation system for the cars
Someone has to develop the software to put into the autonomous driving car
UBUNTU system in the car; basically a big data center within the car itself
Data center will be local (car drives to data center to upload info)
2GB/second = ALL the data
Different countries use different data; different "flavors” of traffic patterns
IT shared services integrated with the other organizational units: Powertrain/testing, digital vehicle, AD (windows, Linux, big data, cloud) - so the business units have access to the IT infrastructure. IT not separate, on the floor with everybody else
Goal is that each business unit can support itself because there is an IT support already integrated within the team. Don't have to wait for additional communication channels
Daimler/Bosch in Germany -
This is 50/50 leadership/technical expertise; a bit of an architectural design role that involves project management
Needs to be a strong counterpart to a software developer. If they mess up the error is permanent
Have to meet the SV expectation of production and profitability and speed (team of 500-600) but they carry the weight of the 285,000 Daimler employees
MBRDNA is viewed as a startup within Daimler but still have to answer to Daimler P&P
They are trying to break the rules and come up with their own, better solutions while still adhering to Daimler policies
ONE position
5 year long project
Infrastructure: doesn't matter what industry they come from (doesn't have to be automotive) as long as they come from a heavy data center environment (tools more important)
Can't have different patch levels in the cars to in the German tech - everything has to sync and match completely
EXTREMELY strong communication skills required within the team and Germany
Speak German??? - no, but familiarity/comfort with the culture differences a big plus; be able to handle culture clashes and overcome miscommunications effectively
Business schedule across time zones? Work with other teams? No weekend or midnight calls; 7am Monday usually the worst case scenario
Linux, communication, architecture, automation (transferable automation tools OK), Ansible/Python scripting (a lot), they aren't really big on Cloud because of the data size so that isn't as important, Agile, DevOps, Scrum, Kanban, investment suite, daily standups within the team as well as the business unit, a few other daily standups with Germany to ensure there is equilibrium in communication. Need someone who will model good communication across all parties and bridge this.
Many good concepts suffer from poor communication. Yes.
They want to skip the phone interview. They want to meet candidates face to face first - between 30-60 minutes
Sense of urgency is very high
