Within TRIUMF, our Controls Group provides engineering support to our Science, Accelerator, and Life Science Divisions in the area of control systems engineering design, implementation and maintenance. The core work includes use of the EPICS toolkit to produce operator interface, applications, control algorithms, and device drivers. This busy group implements and maintains necessary computer infrastructure for control systems under its jurisdiction. This specialized sub-group produces Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) software and installs PLC hardware. We are currently accepting applications for a PLC Controls Engineer. As the successful candidate, you will provide hands-on technical support for the operation, production, installation and troubleshooting of our PLC controlled systems. You will be responsible for using intermediate and advanced methodologies to design, test and maintain associated control system hardware and/or software components. PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES: • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and professionals across disciplines to design, build, and implement PLC systems to support TRIUMF's scientific and operational objectives. • Integrate automation solutions for particle accelerators, laboratory systems, and related infrastructure. • Perform regular system maintenance and upgrades (hardware and software) to ensure reliability and safety. • Contributes to and participates in critical review processes as a reviewer, observer, and presenter. • Assist in the commissioning and startup of new automation systems. • Address technical challenges of moderate scope to develop effective solutions. • Perform system diagnostics and provide solutions to enhance performance and efficiency. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: • Understanding of control system design, instrumentation, and process automation. • Uses Microsoft Office-based productivity tools • Works under frequently tight deadlines and manages time by assessing priorities and adjusting schedules and work plans • Critical thinking to assess technical proposals, suggest implementation strategies, and develop working designs • Hands-on experience with PLC platforms (e.g., Schneider Electric, Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Siemens). • Knowledge of SCADA systems, HMI development, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP). • Effective verbal and written communication MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary educational institution • Two to four years of professional work experience or equivalent • Registered as or qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer or EIT in the province of British Columbia QUALIFICATION CONSIDERED AN ASSET: • Experience in a research facility or working with scientific instrumentation. • Familiarity with radiation safety and operation in a high-energy environment. NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER: Some work will require access to exclusion areas where there are activated components. The position requires the incumbent to be trained as a NEW. TRIUMF will provide this training for the successful candidate. Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
