Position Overview
The Sales Application Engineer (SAE) plays a critical role in supporting DES’s commercial growth by acting as the technical bridge between customers, sales teams, and internal product and engineering organizations. The SAE supports the pursuit of complex commercial energy storage and microgrid opportunities by delivering technically sound, customer-aligned solutions throughout the pre-sales lifecycle.
This role requires strong technical expertise in battery energy storage systems (BESS), power electronics, and system integration, combined with the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Location
Hybrid position (minimum 3-days per week in Richmond, BC office) with some travel to DES events, customer meetings, and trade shows.
Role Responsibilities
• Serve as the technical representative for the sales organization, acting as the primary technical interface among customers, distribution partners, EPCs/developers, and internal product teams.
• Lead technical discovery to qualify customer requirements including power needs, duty cycles, environmental constraints, and system integration points.
• Deliver clear, confident technical solutions during customer engagements, covering system architecture, sizing, and configuration.
• Develop and validate single-line diagrams (SLDs), equipment layouts, and high-level system designs to support sales proposals.
• Architect battery and energy storage solutions that effectively leverage DES products and align with customer application requirements.
• Translate customer feedback and field insights into actionable input for Product Management and Marketing.
• Support proposal development by producing preliminary system designs, configurations, BOMs, and technical summaries.
• Assist with development of sales enablement tools, application guides, and technical documentation.
Required Qualifications & Skills
• 3+ years of professional experience in a sales engineering or technical support role, preferably in an industry related to energy storage or renewables.
• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) required; Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) is an asset.
• Working knowledge of commercial and residential BESS, hybrid PV + storage systems, inverter-based power systems, and system integration.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Consultative technical selling skills with the ability to guide customers through solution driven value propositions.
• Hands-on application engineering experience sizing, specifying, and configuring technical solutions.
• Strong analytical, structured, detail-oriented problem-solving skills.
• Collaborative mindset with a strong customer-focused approach in fast-paced commercial environments.
Nice-to-Have Skills
• Advanced understanding of battery fundamentals including C-rates, thermal behavior, and BMS.
• Familiarity with North American electrical codes, interconnection standards, and permitting processes.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
• Knowledge of renewable energy and storage technology competitive landscapes.
• Exposure to microgrid architectures, controls, EMS/PCS integration, and industry compliance standards.
• Experience with CRM platforms such as HubSpot.
Compensation & Benefits
• Salary Range: $95,000 - $115,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
• Bonus: Eligible for an annual performance bonus of up to 20% of base salary.
