Job Overview
As a Java-focused Tech Lead, you will be the technical anchor for one of our core payments engineering teams. You will architect, build, and maintain high-throughput, low-latency Java services that power our payment processing, fraud engine, or ledger systems.
Key Responsibilities
• Technical Leadership & Architecture:
• Lead the design, development, and evolution of our core Java-based payment processing systems (e.g., transaction orchestration, acquirer integrations, fraud screening, settlements).
• Define and enforce architectural standards for our Java microservices ecosystem, ensuring scalability, resilience (99.99%+ uptime), and security.
• Make critical technology stack decisions (libraries, frameworks, tools) and drive modernization initiatives (e.g., JDK upgrades, framework migrations).
• Champion Clean Code, TDD/BDD, and DevOps principles within the team.
• Hands-On Development & Mentorship:
• Spend significant time coding, reviewing code (Pull Requests), and solving complex technical problems. You are a leader who codes.
• Mentor and upskill engineers on advanced Java concepts, performance optimization, and system design patterns.
• Foster a culture of engineering excellence through pair programming, tech talks, and workshops.
• Delivery & Project Leadership:
• Collaborate with Product Managers to break down complex business requirements (e.g., new payment methods, regulatory features) into actionable technical stories.
• Own the technical delivery roadmap for your team, ensuring on-time, high-quality releases.
• Manage technical debt and advocate for necessary infrastructure investments.
• Production Excellence:
• Drive the implementation of robust monitoring, alerting (using tools like Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog), and incident response processes.
• Lead blameless post-mortems and implement improvements to prevent recurrence of production issues.
Qualifications
• 5+ years of professional software development experience, with at least 3+ years focused on Java
• Good to have technical leadership role
• Deep, hands-on expertise in modern Java and the Spring ecosystem
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems patterns: resilience (circuit breakers, retries), event-driven architecture (Kafka, SNS/SQS), and REST/APIs
• Expertise with SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) for financial data integrity and familiarity with NoSQL where appropriate.
• Solid experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, CircleCI), containerization (Docker), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CDK).
• FinTech/Payments Domain Knowledge: Direct experience with payment processing, gateways, card networks (Visa/MC), card-not-present (CNP) flows, or financial reconciliations.
Nice-to-Haves:
• Experience with real-time payments (RTP, FedNow, SEPA Instant) or cross-border transactions.
• Contributions to open-source Java projects.
• Experience in a high-growth startup/scale-up environment.
