We’re hiring a Backend/Services Engineer to join our growing engineering organization in Chicago. In this role, you will work closely with a collaborative, mission-driven team to design and build backend systems that power security and privacy at scale, while ensuring performance, reliability, and maintainability. This is a full-time, on-site role in our Chicago office. We believe working together in-person fosters better collaboration, mentorship, and connection. Responsibilities • Design, implement, and maintain backend services that drive our security and privacy-first platform. • Collaborate with product managers, infrastructure teams, and fellow engineers to architect efficient and scalable solutions. • Work closely with security and privacy experts to build systems that balance strong protections with practical usability. • Contribute to the technical direction of backend projects from early discussions to deployment and operational support. • Continuously improve code quality, system performance, and operational best practices. Requirements • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical field. • Strong programming experience in systems-level languages, particularly Go and C. • Deep understanding of computing fundamentals including algorithms, data structures, networking, and distributed systems. • Experience building backend systems with a focus on efficiency, reliability, and security. • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills. • Willingness to work full-time on-site in our Chicago office. Nice to have • Experience building privacy-enhancing technologies or security-critical systems. • Experience working with Linux system utilities and scripting. • Familiarity with cryptographic principles or secure software development practices. • Familiarity with web development technologies, particularly PHP and Laravel
