We offer many remote and hybrid career opportunities. How you will impact the organization… We are seeking a strategic technical leader to drive the architectural vision for our next-generation eCommerce and customer experience platform. This role is pivotal in shifting our engineering strategy from monolithic applications to a flexible, scalable, and distributed web ecosystem. The Staff Engineer will not only architect the core foundation that hosts independent applications but also set the multi-year technical strategy that empowers autonomous product teams to develop, deploy, and manage features independently. This position requires expert-level domain knowledge to bridge the gap between complex infrastructure and seamless user experience. The value you will deliver… • Architectural Strategy & Vision: Lead the high-level architecture and implementation of a highly scalable, distributed front-end ecosystem, utilizing modern modular architecture patterns to host independent functional applications. • Platform Engineering: Design and implement core platform services (Identity, Navigation, Global State, and Inter-App Communication) that serve as the foundation for all product teams, ensuring a unified and resilient customer experience. • Technical Standardization: Define and enforce strict coding standards, application lifecycle contracts, and integration patterns to ensure application isolation and memory optimization across the system. • Cross-Team Leadership: Influence multiple product teams by establishing a shared component library and design system standards to prevent styling conflicts and ensure visual consistency across independent deployments. • Performance & Scalability: Drive architectural improvements that ensure the platform remains performant, responsive, and capable of preserving user state across complex workflows, eliminating bottlenecks associated with monolithic deployments. • Mentorship & Code Fluency: Serve as the technical authority for front-end engineering; mentor senior engineers, review complex technical designs, and solve the deepest coding/debugging challenges related to state management and asynchronous loading. • DevOps & CI/CD Integration: Collaborate with DevOps to implement independent deployment strategies that allow for atomic rollouts and instant rollbacks without requiring full platform regression testing. • Build vs. Buy: Conduct strategic evaluations for new technologies and tools to improve developer velocity and long-term code health. • Contribute to the technical recruitment process to identify top-tier engineering talent. • Write high-level technical documentation and white papers to communicate architectural decisions to executive stakeholders and non-technical audiences. • Serve as a technical liaison between product management and engineering to ensure feasibility of roadmap items. • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested. Consensus reserves the right to add or change duties at any time. What you will bring to the table… • 10+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on high-scale web applications. • 8+ years front-end architecture experience with a mastery of JavaScript/TypeScript, React, MFE, and modern frameworks with deep experience in component architecture and performance optimization. • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional technical initiatives or platform re-architecture projects. • Proven experience establishing engineering best practices, code quality standards, and technical roadmaps across multiple teams. • Proven track record of reducing technical debt or improving developer velocity through architectural redesign. • Distributed Systems Architecture: Deep understanding of techniques for splitting code across distributed systems, lazy loading, and runtime integration. • Infrastructure & API: Experience designing secure API gateways, handling authentication, and managing complex data flow between client and server. • State Management: Proven ability to manage complex application state and lifecycle methods in a single-page application environment. • Strategic Influence: Ability to set multi-year technical strategy and influence direction across teams without direct authority. • Problem Solving: Proactively identifies systemic risks (e.g., single points of failure) and architects solutions to mitigate them before they impact productivity. • Communication: Expert capability in communicating complex architectural topics (whiteboarding systems with drill-down capability) to both engineering teams and executive leadership. • Autonomy: Takes ownership of significant, multi-team projects and drives them to completion with high standards for quality and detail. You will stand out if you also have… • Experience working in regulated industries such as Legal, Healthcare, or FinTech. • Familiarity with legacy protocols (e.g., Fax, SIP) or bridging legacy systems with modern web interfaces. • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes). Additional details… • Location requirements: Fully remote within the U.S. • Travel requirements: Up to 10% travel. • Physical requirements: Must be able to sit for long periods, as well as, handle long periods of screen time. • Technology requirements: Reliable, high speed internet. • Eligible for sponsorship: No. The salary range for this role is $130,000-$200,000 USD annually. The total compensation package for this position is negotiable and may also include annual performance bonus, ESPP, enhanced time off packages and benefits.
