Role Overview:
The Data Engineering Specialist will become part of a dynamic Agile scrum team dedicated to advancing Synchrony's Enterprise Data Lake. This role focuses on effectively integrating data from various internal and external sources, delivering insightful analytics, and ensuring seamless integration with essential systems. A key part of your responsibilities will be participating in data analysis initiatives to deliver top-quality data ingestion, standardization, and curation while adhering to data sourcing, quality, and governance standards.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Develop advanced big data applications within the Hadoop ecosystem.
• Engage in the Agile development process, including backlog management, programming, code reviews, testing, and deployment.
• Collaborate with team members to achieve impactful business results in a rapidly evolving environment.
• Independently design analytic applications using technologies like Hadoop, NoSQL, In-memory Data Grids, Kafka, Spark, and Ab Initio.
• Conduct data analysis for effective data ingestion, standardization, and curation, ensuring data is understood in a business context.
• Identify necessary components and effort required for proper data ingestion and transformation.
• Profile data to ascertain data elements and define data quality rules through business term mappings.
• Cooperate with the Data Office to maintain documentation of data dictionaries for all ingested and generated datasets.
• Document data lineage in the relevant enterprise metadata repositories.
• Assist in the creation and application of data quality standards.
• Ensure accurate identification of sensitive and critical data elements.
• Prepare source-to-target data mapping documents.
• Examine existing processes to identify deficiencies and propose enhancements.
• Conduct thorough tests of current processes, evaluating components for improvement.
• Grasp both functional and non-functional requirements to prepare appropriate test data.
• Plan, develop, and manage test cases and scripts.
• Identify process bottlenecks and suggest actionable improvements.
• Execute test scripts and compile results.
• Present test cases, outcomes, reports, and metrics to the Office of Agile as required.
• Undertake additional responsibilities to contribute to the team and application success while ensuring compliance with data sourcing, quality, and governance standards.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Econometrics); or a high school diploma/GED with a minimum of 2 years of IT experience.
• Experience in writing shell scripts, complex SQL queries, Hive scripts, Hadoop commands, and using Git.
• Ability to create abstracted, reusable code components.
• Proficient in at least one programming language such as Scala, Java, or Python.
• Analytical mindset with a willingness to learn new technologies quickly.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Strong collaboration skills across technical teams, business analysts, and operational staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with Ab Initio tools such as GDE, Co>Operating System, Control Center, and others.
• Knowledge of Cloudera, Kafka, Spark, Shell Script, and Linux.
• Experience with public cloud data engineering services (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Acquainted with data management tools (e.g., Collibra).
• Background in ETL, data warehousing, or data lakes.
• Strong understanding of Synchrony’s business operations and practices.
• Proven ability to work effectively in an Agile team environment.
• Experience in the financial industry or credit processing.
• History of managing onshore/offshore resources in a geographically diverse team.
• Client-facing experience is a plus.
• Proficient in maintaining data dictionaries and other information in Collibra.
• Outstanding analytical, organizational, and influencing skills demonstrated by a record of successful projects.
Salary Information: The salary range for this position is 85,000.00 - 140,000.00 USD annually, with eligibility for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance. Compensation will be adjusted based on experience and skill level.
