Position: Lead Firmware Engineer
Location: NYC
Industry: B2B Technology
Our client is looking to hire a Lead Firmware Engineer to drive the design and delivery of field-ready firmware for smart devices and build a firmware team. You will own firmware projects end-to-end while building and scaling the business firmware function, establishing the technical foundations, development processes, and quality standards needed to support a growing portfolio of regulated IoT products.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who has built or helped build a firmware team before and is excited to do it again—shipping real devices and creating systems that scale.
Responsibilities:
• Take full ownership of embedded firmware development, from initial concept work through production launch and fleet deployment
• Build and scale the firmware function, providing technical leadership, direction, and best practices as the team grows
• Define and implement strong engineering processes around reviews, version control, testing, and release management
• Work closely with hardware and product counterparts to support new device development and continuous improvements
• Drive performance optimization across efficiency, stability, responsiveness, and memory usage
• Develop automated validation systems, including embedded test frameworks and continuous integration environments
• Manage firmware release cycles, including update strategy, documentation, and over-the-air delivery workflows
• Troubleshoot complex system-level issues across software and hardware layers using debugging tools, logs, and device telemetry
• Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure smooth integration between firmware, backend services, and field operations
• Create clear technical documentation including architecture notes, specifications, and release materials
• Coach and support other engineers, maintaining high standards for code quality and long-term reliability
Requirements:
• 4–5 years of embedded or firmware engineering experience
• Background working within a fast-paced, early-stage connected device or hardware-focused technology environment
• Experience participating in peer code review and supporting firmware quality across a team
• Familiarity with strong firmware development processes, including testing, version control, and release discipline
• Motivated to step into a leadership role and help build or grow a firmware team
• Proven track record of delivering firmware that has been successfully deployed at scale across large device fleets
• Based in the New York area or open to relocating for an on-site role
• Strong execution mindset with the ability to move quickly in a demanding environment
• Bonus: exposure to low-power wireless networking technologies such as LoRaWAN
Benefits:
• Base salary of $170,000–$220,000
• Equity
• Comprehensive healthcare benefits
• Generous PTO, and 401(k)
