Frontend / Backend Developer (Hybrid – New York, 3 days per week at the office)
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: 12 months, W2 or 1099
Industry: Banking / Highly Regulated Financial Environment
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Front-End / Backend Developer to join a technical delivery team within a large, complex, and highly regulated financial institution. This is a hands‑on engineering role, not a manager or analyst position. The ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable digging into code, solving problems under pressure, and navigating environments with strict compliance, audit, and change‑control processes.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain front-end and back-end components within a mission‑critical banking technology environment.
• Troubleshoot complex technical issues across multiple layers of the stack.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams operating under rigorous controls and regulatory frameworks.
• Work effectively in a hybrid work model and adapt quickly to shifting priorities in a high-pressure environment.
Required Experience & Skills
• 5–10 years of total software engineering experience.
• Backend engineering experience is essential (this role is not suitable for frontend‑only developers).
• 2–3+ years of hands‑on Java experience.
• Strong proficiency in modern front-end technologies such as: Angular, React, JavaScript, TypeScript
• SQL expertise (3–5 years) including familiarity with: Complex SQL operations, CTEs, query plans, indexing, and SQL troubleshooting
Professional Background
• Previous experience working in a banking, financial services, or similarly regulated environment.
• Ability to operate within environments characterized by:
Strict compliance and audit controls
Heavy process governance and approvals
High-pressure operational expectations
No specific financial product knowledge required, but must be comfortable in a not‑always developer-friendly environment with significant operational oversight.
Ideal Candidate Profile
You thrive in environments where problem‑solving, adaptability, and resilience matter just as much as technical depth. You are a hands-on engineer who enjoys contributing directly to codebases and working through the complexities of enterprise‑scale financial systems.
