Location: Remote/Occasional travel to London Paddington
Contract Length: 6 months
Start Date: ASAP
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced DevOps Lead/Senior DevOps Engineer to take ownership of a greenfield CI/CD build for an Azure Data Factory (ADF) estate. This is a hands-on role where you'll design, implement, and deliver a production-grade pipeline using GitHub Repos & Actions (not Azure Repos). You will be the go-to expert for release engineering, security, observability, and standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Build and ship a CI/CD pipeline from scratch using GitHub Actions.
• Architect multi-environment workflows (Dev/QA/Prod) with automated validation, deployment, smoke tests, and rollback.
• Implement OIDC GitHub?Azure federation for passwordless deployments.
• Package and deploy ADF artifacts using ARM/Bicep with environment parameterisation.
• Centralise secrets in Azure Key Vault and enforce security best practices.
• Set up telemetry, dashboards, and alerts for ADF runs.
• Produce documentation, runbooks, and deliver training to BI Engineers for self-serve capability.
What We're Looking For
• Proven experience building CI/CD pipelines from zero to production.
• Expert in GitHub Actions (environments, approvals, reusable actions, tagging).
• Strong ADF automation skills: adf_publish, ARM/Bicep, linked services, triggers.
• Knowledge of Azure RBAC, service principals, and Key Vault integration.
• Excellent technical documentation and training delivery skills.
• Familiarity with policy-as-code, JSON schema validation, and linting.
Required Key Experience
• Hands-on ADF automation: adf_publish, ARM/Bicep, environment parameterisation, linked services, self-hosted/managed IRs, trigger design.
• GitHub Actions expert: environments, approvals, required checks, reusable/composite actions, artifacts, concurrency, release tagging.
• Identity & Secrets: OIDC federation GitHub?Azure, service principals, Azure RBAC, Azure Key Vault references in ADF.
• Proven record of building CI/CD from zero to first production release-solo or as the primary implementer.
• Excellent technical writing and training delivery (docs, runbooks, workshops).
• Policy-as-code (JSON schema validation for ARM), linting of ADF JSON, path filters.
• Experience with GitHub self-hosted runners and autoscaling.
• ADF performance/cost tuning (IR sizing, concurrency, retry/backoff).
Responsibilities After Go-Live
• Own release reliability and improvements (new checks, better alerts, faster rollbacks).
• Run office hours, code reviews, and refresh training; maintain ADRs and standards.
• Partner with Infra/Architecture/Security to evidence compliance, cost, and risk posture.
