Join our innovative Emerging Tech team to build the Back End foundation for Project Sparky, an AI-powered assistant revolutionizing everyday shopping with intelligent, context-aware experiences. In this pivotal role, you will design and scale distributed Back End systems, APIs, and data pipelines that seamlessly integrate with generative and agentic AI. Collaborate closely with mobile, web, and AI/ML teams to deliver reliable, low-latency conversational experiences for millions of customers.

Key Responsibilities:
• Design and implement scalable distributed Back End systems that support customer-facing products at Walmart scale.
• Own the architecture, data flows, and API designs to ensure quick and reliable user experiences.
• Strike the right balance between scalability, reliability, latency, and cost in production environments.
• Implement modern cloud, containerization, observability, and CI/CD practices to improve service evolution.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues and facilitate improvements through effective postmortems.
• Mentor and guide engineers, influencing long-term architectural decisions across various services.
• Collaborate with product and platform teams to develop solutions aligned with long-term business objectives.
Who We Are Hiring:
Principal Engineers: You will spearhead platform-level architecture and guide teams to deliver resilient systems at scale.
• 10-15+ years of Back End engineering experience (Java).
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems, data management, and cloud infrastructure.
• Experienced in creating highly available and scalable services along with supporting tooling.
• Proven ability in mentorship and technical leadership across product lines.
Staff Engineers: You will drive technical excellence and take end-to-end ownership of projects.
• 7-10+ years of Back End engineering experience (Java).
• Experience owning significant Front End surfaces or platform-level capabilities.
• Strong system design instincts, collaborating effectively with Back End and cross-functional teams.
• Experience in mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across teams.

The full Job Description can be made available during the hiring process. Our annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00, with additional performance bonuses available.
